# Single stair resources for Chicago Chicago Cityscape anticipates a discussion in 2025 about updating the building code to allow the use of a single exiting stair in more situations than currently allowed. In many cases this would make it possible to build more housing on smaller lots, make it feasible to build housing on unusually shaped lots, and in other cases increase fire safety. Also known as "smart stair", the policy is effective in Seattle, New York City, Austin, and other cities across the country. Internationally, it's the norm for small and medium sized multifamily housing. Adopting a smart stair policy would enable building historic typologies again, including sunlight suites, courtyard buildings, and point access blocks. ## Resources - [The Seattle Special: A US City’s Unique Approach to Small Infill Lots](https://www.mercatus.org/research/policy-briefs/seattle-special-us-citys-unique-approach-small-infill-lots).
