# How to measure ceiling height in preparation for an ADU in Chicago The Chicago building code generally requires that every dwelling unit has a minimum ceiling height of 7'. This Knowledge Base article will guide you on the steps to determining if your potential ADU space has sufficient ceiling height. *Minimum ceiling heights are regulated by [14B-12-1207](https://codelibrary.amlegal.com/codes/chicago/latest/chicago_il/0-0-0-2665723) Interior space dimensions in the Chicago Building Code* To measure the ceiling height, you will need a tape measure that's at least 10' long. ## Basements Find the highest part of the room and measure the distance between the finished floor (top of carpet, linoleum, wood, or tile) and the finished ceiling (drywall, drop ceiling, etc.). If this is 7' or higher then you can likely build a basement unit. Then, find the lowest part of the room and measure the same distance as before. If this is 7' or higher then you can very likely build a basement unit. If either distance is shorter than 7' then you'll need to consult this graphic to see if any of the exceptions to the 7' minimum in the Chicago building code. ![[aduceilingheight_chart.png]]
